The calculator reverse-engineers how many vehicles Tesla needs to sell a year to justify its market value, which hit a new high of $89 billion on Jan. 8, 2020.

The main inputs are Tesla’s market cap, the pre-tax margin, the price-earnings multiple and the average price per vehicle. Readers can adjust any of these to determine the number of Model 3, S, X and Y cars Elon Musk’s outfit.

The range for both the pre-tax margin and the P/E multiple are based on the current performance of Tesla’s more established global rivals. The calculator assumes Tesla’s tax rate is 21%.
