President Park's friendship with Choi Soon-sil dates back to the 1970s, and started because of Choi's father, who was connected with the Park family.
South Korean opposition political parties said this week they will review strategies to impeach Park after prosecutors said she was an accomplice in the corruption scandal. These are the steps that will have to occur for Park's impeachment to take place.
Impeachment motion initiated if half of the National Assembly’s 300 members agree. Currently, the ruling Saenuri Party has 129 seats.
The impeachment motion passes if a two-thirds majority of the National Assembly agree.
At least six of the nine members of the Constitutional Court has to approve the impeachment motion. The court has 180 days to deliberate.
If it is approved, a new election is called to elect a successor within 60 days.
